A Humble Thought for a Greener Diwali

Diwali comes and it goes and with each passing year reminds some, who are fortunate, of the bounty available to us all.  After all, these are the fruits of our labour! We pray for health, wealth and good fortune and buy, buy, buy - perhaps, to remind ourselves of our good fortune-  because it's Diwali.
But wait! here comes Christmas, then a birthday, then another festival, then a sale!
 Our appetite is insatiable!

Mother Earth gently says-' I know you are hungry- have some more,  I'll give you all I can!'.
We, the children of Earth cry,
MORE - MORE - MORE

The mother quietly opens another secret cupboard and pulls out her reserves.
We, the children of Earth cry,MORE - MORE - MORE

MORE - MORE -

Like every hungry child, all we feel is our hunger. We forget to see the mother's helplessness or feel her pain.
Think First!
She finally gives us her most cherished jewels, left to her, perhaps, by her own mother.
We, the children of Earth still cry,MORE

Be it Apnee MA (one's own Mother) or Dhartee MA ( Mother Earth) - it's time to stop taking and start giving.
I am hoping to make this Diwali really special for Dhartee MA.
Are you?

Some Further Thoughts abut Diwali
Traditions vs Values?

NAMASTE AND SHUBH DIWALI TO YOU ALL

Whatever Diwali has come to mean to us depends upon the customs, traditions and rituals followed by our families, communities and mentors. We all share in the joy and festivities of Diwali because 'it is the time to do so'. Cards, Mithai, Presents, Crackers help us to join in the FUN of the celebration without having to question too deeply the consequences of our extravagance.

Being involved in the education of our 'future' (the children) makes me question my actions and their consequences upon the legacy that we are leaving our children.

I would like to strike a balance between maintaining traditional foundations and building a future which is safer, more compassionate and responsible.

For that reason I send out a more serious message this Diwali asking you to ask yourself some questions and help us all find some answers.

Let us maintain the Essence of Diwali but create a new Perfume for the freshness of our youth.

Eco sensitive Initiatives around Diwali
  • With the growing recognition of the impacts of Diwali on the environment, several groups have started to reinterpret the rituals and traditions to become more sensitive to nature. For instance, the children of NCL school, Pune celebrate a different Diwali by sharing clothes with the lesser privileged.
